The Learning Environment

The learning environment is one that involves the "instructional, interpersonal, and physical characteristics of the classroom which may influence student performance."

To establish a learning environment that is positive, have a plan for which students will feel that they are emotionally and physically safe. Ensure that the classroom environment allows for maximum learning and is challenging all students. Have an environment in which all students a high level of respect and expectations towards their participation and engagement. Not having a positive learning environment will lead students to show that they have a lack of self control and respect. (Appropriate Practices)

Here are some tips on how to maintain a positive learning environment:
  • Establish rules of behavior by telling students what is required of them when participating in an activity. Failure to comply with the rules, should result in disciplinary measures.
  • Allow only positive encouragement from both the teacher and the students. Such as "Good job," or "Good try."
  • When teaching, allow for wiggle room. Wiggle room means that students that are below or above the level of of activity that is being taught are allowed to perform at that level.
